The proverb is ancient Latin - 'audentes fortuna iuvat' appears in Virgil's Aeneid, and Pliny the Elder is reported to have said 'fortes fortuna iuvat' as he sailed toward the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is sometimes misremembered as 'opportunity favors the bold'.
