Move fast and break things
When building new products or startups
What Does “Move fast and break things” Mean?
Speed matters more than perfection in rapidly changing markets. Break things deliberately to learn fast. Iterate quickly rather than planning perfectly.
Origin and History
This was Facebook's internal motto under Mark Zuckerberg. In 2014 the company publicly replaced it with 'Move fast with stable infrastructure', a sign that breaking things had become too costly at scale.
What Happens When You Break It
Moving slowly allows competitors to win, markets to shift, and opportunities to pass. Perfect planning misses market timing.
Benefits of Following This Rule
Moving fast captures opportunities, learns faster, beats competition, discovers what works through iteration, and wins in rapidly changing markets.
